Plot & Summary
Imagine being thrust onto the throne of England when you are only just 18 years of age. That was the fate of THE YOUNG VICTORIA, brought to life on screen by director Jean-Marc Vallee with a screenplay by Julian Fellowes. EMILY BLUNT plays the young Victoria, protected from birth from the outside world by her mother the Duchess of Kent – MIRANDA RICHARDSON – and by her mother’s advisor Sir John Conroy – MARK STRONG. But it’s the politics of Europe that envelop the future Queen as the German side of her family vie for influence over her, as they try to set up a marriage with Prince Albert – RUPERT FRIEND.

Her relationship with Prime Minister Lord Melbourne – PAUL BETTANY – would lead to internal political problems.

This is such an interesting film if you’re not aware of the early history of Victoria, the attempts to establish her mother and Conroy as regents, the animosity of King William IV, played by JIM BROADBENT, towards her mother, but in the end it’s about her romance with Albert, excellently played by RUPERT FRIEND.

It’s actually a quite lovely film, gorgeous locations, fabulous costumes, and truly excellent performances. EMILY BLUNT is totally believable as the young Queen, she’s establishing herself as a fine young screen actress. And RUPERT FRIEND is much less effete than he appears in CHERI.
