Plot & Summary

In 1993 Algiers, as civil war looms on the horizon, former freedom fighter Madame Osmane runs her apartment building with an iron fist. Determined to be respected despite the absence of a man of the house, Madame Osmane imposes her tyranical will on her daughter Sakina, maid Meriem and the other women who live in her building. But Madame Osmane's characteristic ferociousness will eventually lead to tragic consequences.

The acting is excellent, the dialogue is almost entirely in French although the singing is in Arabic....if one were to know Algeria only from the news reports in the international press, one would be very surprised at this portrait of Algerian society.
