Un prophète [The Prophet] (2009) - French

Nominated for Oscar 2010 for Best Foreign Film

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1235166/
Plot & Summary
Nineteen year-old Franco-Arab Malik El Djebena is just starting his six year prison sentence in Brécourt. Although he has spent the better part of his life in juvenile detention, this stint is his first in an adult prison. Beyond the division of Corsicans and Muslims in the prison (the Corsicans who with their guard connections rule what happens in the prison), he has no known friends or enemies inside. He is just hoping to serve his time in peace and without incident, despite having no prospects once he's out of jail since he's illiterate and has no support outside of the prison. Due to logistics, the head of Corsican inmates, a sadistic mafioso named César Luciani, co-opts Malik as part of the Corsicans' activities, not only regarding what happens inside the prison, but also continued criminal activities outside. The innocent Malik has no idea what to do but cooperate. This move does not sit well with the other Corsicans, who only see Malik as a dirty Arab, and the Muslims who now mistrust him. But as time goes on, Malik works to save himself while in prison, while setting up his life post prison on his own terms. Both his demon and his salvation in prison is the specter of one of the first people he really got to know during his incarceration.

At 20, she's a street singer discovered by a club owner who's soon murdered, coached by a musician who brings her to concert halls, and then quickly famous. Constant companions are alcohol and heartache. The tragedies of her love affair with Marcel Cerdan and the death of her only child belie the words of one of her signature songs, "Non, je ne regrette rien." La habitación de Fermat [Fermat's Room] (2007) - Spain

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1016301/

Plot & Summary
“Do you know what prime numbers are?” a voice asks during Fermat’s Room’s opening moments. “If not, you can just leave now.” Luckily, you don’t need to know much about maths to understand this claustrophobic thriller. Its subject matter is abstract equations, but what you’ll be left with as the credits roll is clammy palms and an adrenaline comedown, rather than a school lesson buzzing in your head.
The voice belongs to Alejo Sauras, playing a floppy haired, blue-eyed cutie, who just happens to be one of the world’s leading mathematicians. He’s working on a proof of Goldbach’s Conjecture, the theory that every even number is the sum of two primes. But then his laptop gets destroyed, a mysterious invitation to a meeting of mathematical minds arrives at his door, and before you can say Cube, he’s stuck in a room that’s shrinking by the second with three other eggheads. To slow the mechanism threatening to crush them, the team must solve a series of puzzles, but each is hiding secrets that may explain what got them into this mess in the first place.
First-time writer/director team Luis Piedrahita and Rodrigo Sopeña know how to hike up the suspense, and their script throws out enough red herrings that smart-arses who like to claim they saw it all coming should be kept quiet. The tension steadily grows as the room gets cosier; shots of sliding walls, splintering furniture and exploding lightbulbs are interleaved with a geometrically pleasing bird’s eye view of the dwindling space.

Into Temptation (2009) - USA

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1232824/

Plot & Summary
Sex, sin, and Catholic guilt. If there's a better recipe for cinematic troublemaking, I don't want to know about it. "Into Temptation" dives into the deep end of collar-tightening, rosary-fingering unrest, creating a riveting momentum as it looks to articulate the push and pull between the obligations of religion and the overwhelming sway of sexuality. Sharply constructed with a heavy spray of noirish aroma, "Into Temptation" is a uniquely accomplished indie film, wielding salacious material sensitively, building an intoxicating sense of intrigue and discomfort.
Slightly bored with his daily business as a priest, Father John Buerlien (Jeremy Sisto) finds the arrival of a prostitute named Linda (Kristin Chenoweth) in his confessional captures his curiosity. Asking for absolution before she attempts suicide, Linda takes off into the night, leaving John consumed with finding her. Delving into the seedy underbelly of the city, John questions a series of unsavory types to learn more about this mysterious woman entangled in his every thought. Linda, on a crash course with death, seeks her own peace, confronting the violations of her life as she prepares for the end.

Storm (2009) - Germany/Denmark/Netherlands

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0768239/

Plot & Summary
Hannah Maynard is prosecuting a Bosnian-Serb accused of war crimes in a maddeningly long, drawn out trial. However, it may all be for naught when her star witness is exposed as a fabricator and commits suicide shortly thereafter. Still, something about his behavior and that of his sister, Mira Arendt, arouses her suspicions. If he was not present when the atrocities in question occurred, perhaps she was. Not surprisingly, Mira is reluctant to even talk to the prosecutor, let alone testify.

Like any government office, the court is a hotbed of political infighting and bloated egos. Her boss, Keith Hayward, is skillful at navigating those roiling waters, but she only trusts him so far. Fortunately she has the support of her lover, Jonas Dahlberg, a jowly older Scandinavian EU representative. Given some rope by Hayward, she learns Arendt did indeed witness some of the events in question. Yet, what happened to her afterward was far worse—but not covered by Maynard’s original indictment.

While “Storm” is well stocked with interesting character actors, the leads are more of a mixed bag. Romanian Anamaria Marinca is fast becoming one of the great international screen actors of the day. After unforgettable work in “4 Months 3 weeks and 2 Days,” and a small but compelling turn in “Five Minutes of Heaven,” she again makes a strong impression as Arendt, convincingly conveying a wide spectrum of emotions, including fear, anger, and resolve.

Written by Schmid and Bernd Lange, “Storm” is a very smart (and cynical) film, up until the utterly unbelievable Hollywood-style ending. Still, “Storm” is hardly the first film to have trouble wrapping things up. For the most part, it is a fascinating depiction of the limits of international criminal law and a painful reminder of the crimes committed against humanity by the Bosnian-Serbs and their Serbian allies.

Leila Khaled: Hijacker (2006) - Sweden

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0847570/

Plot & Summary
Leila Khaled was the first woman to hijack a plane. In 1969, she showed her grenades to the terrified passengers by order of the Che Guevara commando unit of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Through the ensuing media bombardment, she put the Palestinian nation on the global map. The pretty 24-year-old Leila became a hero to many Palestinians, including the Swedish/Palestinian teenager Lina Makboul, who is now a filmmaker. At least Leila dared to do something, Lina thought at the time. She visits Leila 35 years later with a camera, and finds a woman who does not regret anything.

Nobody likes a 'terrorist'--but watch this film, and you will have a better understanding of what motivates them. Leila Khaled was born in Palestine in 1944, and--along with hundreds of thousands of other Palestinian Arabs--lost her home in 1948 when Israel came into existence. Exiled throughout the Middle East, the Palestinian people placed their hope in Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, but when the 1967 war ended in disaster, they turned to more radical tactics, including airline hijackings. This utterly riveting documentary, produced for Swedish television, tells the story of Ms. Khaled, the poster girl for the Palestinian liberation movement, who was involved in a pair of hijackings, and who now works on behalf of her people as a member of the Palestinian National Council. For anyone interested in the often byzantine history of Palestine and Israel, this is essential viewing.

Etz Limon [Lemon Tree] (2008) Israel

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1172963/

Plot & Summary
Salma Zidane lives in a tiny Palestinian village on the West Bank. She is 45 years old and a widow. Her children have left home, and she is alone. When the Israeli minister of defense builds a house on the other side of the green line, Selma's lemon trees come to the attention of his bodyguards. Her trees are a security risk. They can hide terrorists and impede the bodyguards in their work. In any case, these Palestinian lemon trees simply get in the way of the powerful Minister's superior security needs. The lemon trees were planted by Salma's family many generations ago--they are synonymous with Salma's family history. Salma gets herself a lawyer. But Ziad Daud is up against a battery of clever military lawyers, all of whom are covered by the top brass. It's an unfair battle, that isn't made any easier when the 45-year-old widow falls in love with her lawyer, a divorcee ten years her junior--a scandal as far as her Palestinian neighbors are concerned. On the other side of the grove, Salma's struggle to keep her trees has not gone unnoticed. The defence minister's wife, who has become more and more lonely and unhappy as her husband's political career has blossomed, feels increasingly drawn to Salma as the unfair battle between her husband and their Palestinian neighbors drags on. An invisible bond connects these two very different women who find themselves on the brink of a new phase in their lives.

American Beauty (1999) - USA

Winner of 5 Academy Awards 2000, including Best Actor and Best Picture

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0169547/

Plot & Summary
"American Beauty" is a comedy because we laugh at the absurdity of the hero's problems. And a tragedy because we can identify with his failure--not the specific details, but the general outline.

The movie is about a man who fears growing older, losing the hope of true love and not being respected by those who know him best. If you never experience those feelings, take out a classified ad. People want to take lessons from you.

Lester Burnham, the hero of "American Beauty," is played by Kevin Spacey as a man who is unloved by his daughter, ignored by his wife and unnecessary at work. "I'll be dead in a year," he tells us in almost the first words of the movie. "In a way, I'm dead already." The movie is the story of his rebellion.

Oorlogswinter [Winter in Wartime] (2008) - Holland

Netherlands contender for the 2010 Academy Awards Best Foreign-Language Films Award

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0795441/

Plot & Summary
Winter in Wartime recounts the tale of a small-town adolescent boy Michiel (Martin Lakemeier) who, ashamed of his mayor father's outward friendliness to the Germans, dreams of fighting back, and has his chance when he stumbles on a wounded British airman hiding out in the woods. But he then finds himself in the Greene-like predicament of helping and betraying at the same time. The atmosphere of dread and suspicion is nicely caught by the director Martin Koolhoven, so too the reality of wartime shortages, and if the plot bends towards melodramatic shades then it still never forfeits our interest.

The only present from his estranged father is the titular item – a novelty paper “fortune teller.” He sneaks away from the bullies to nap in the sick bay. He awakes to find everything quiet – school has let out, or has it? It leads to a surprising resolution that I don’t want to spoil for you. If you can get ahold of this one to see how it plays out, I’d encourage it. Miracle Fish is clearly helmed by very talented filmmakers. Australian writer/director Luke Doolan knows how to craft a story, to build suspense, and to keep us engaged all the way through. The short effortlessly moves from playful to disturbing, and the ending’s payoff is fantastic. One could make the case that there isn’t a lot of forward motion in the story, and that Joe doesn’t have much of an arc. But the short is a format where filmmakers should be free to work outside of traditional screenplay/character structure, and this film is effective nonetheless. Producers, take note of a talented newcomer.

Kavi (2009) - India/USA with subtitles

2010 Academy Award Nominee Best Live-Action Short Film

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1399573/

Plot & Summary
Kavi brings us the story of a young boy in India, who lives his whole life in bonded labor. Working with his parents in a brick-making kiln, he is a modern-day slave. He has glimpses of hope every day through local children who play cricket nearby, but his dreams of being one of them are always crushed by the cruel foreman. When a chance comes for his escape, he must decide whether to follow an uncertain dream, or stay with the only life he’s ever known. Kavi is written and directed by American filmmaker Gregg Helvey and was shot in Maharashtra, India, in the local dialect. Sagar Salunke, who plays the title character, is a fantastic find, precocious but not so self-aware. He seems much more natural than most child actors. His story may remind viewers of last year’s Best Picture winner Slumdog Millionaire. It’s a hopeful story with a message behind it. Part of the film’s goal is to raise awareness about modern-day slavery, and its prevalence in the developing world.

The New Tenants (2009) - USA/Denmark

Winner 2010 Academy Award - Best Live-Action Short Film

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1520428/

Plot & Summary
It’s hard to know how exactly to describe The New Tenants. To relate the plot makes it sound like a violent American Pie sequel, but it’s much more sophisticated than that. It involves murder, adultery, drug use, and heroin spiked cinnamon buns – all in a mere twenty minutes. Peter and Frank have recently moved into a new apartment when they find out it has a disturbing history. In the course of the film, the apartment’s dirty past unravels and drops at their feet as they sit and watch. As dark as it sounds, it’s definitely a comedy. Crisp, clever dialogue, some outrageous plot twists; it earns a lot of laughs. Some great acting here too from some of the only actors we’d recognize, specifically Vincent D’Onofrio and Kevin Corrigan. The dark nature might be off-putting to some, but it’s unquestionably entertaining. And though it isn’t doling out deep life lessons, it makes you wonder: when the whole world seems to collapse around you, what else can you do but dance?

The Door (2008) Russian with subtitles

2010 Academy Awards Nominee - Best Live-Action Short Film

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1381557/

Plot & Summary
In The Door, we open with a young man sneaking into what looks like an abandoned city. We soon learn that the city is one of those evacuated by the disaster at Chernobyl. The man has returned to bring back the door of his old home. The door is a piece of tradition; his father’s body was carried on it at his funeral. Now the young man brings the door home for the funeral of his daughter, lost to disease from the radiation. The film takes place in the Ukraine, but is written and directed by Irish filmmaker Juanita Wilson. She brings a very contemplative tone to the piece. Snowy landscapes, the evacuation in flashback, a somber funeral – everything gives a sense of the desolation of the family’s situation. It’s a slow, very beautiful film.

Le petit lieutenant [The Young Lieutenant] (2005) - France

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0431979/

Plot & Summary
This French gem features the restrained and powerful performance that won Nathalie Baye the Cesar award for best actress of 2006.
"Le Petit Lieutenant" is an extremely tough drama about police life. Two Russian immigrants are going around robbing and stabbing people and throwing them into the river, and we see the process by which the homicide team gathers information. Yet this investigation, while at the center of the action, is not central to the movie's purpose, which is to explore the lives of a young rookie lieutenant from Le Havre (Jalil Lespert) and his boss, Caroline, the commandant, played by Baye.

More than on "Prime Suspect," more than any film in recent memory, "Le Petit Lieutenant" conveys the relentless toll of big-city police work. We get this in a number of ways, and yet as it wears on, the film's locus of meaning, more and more, becomes Baye's face. It's all there in her pained, stoic expression -- the physical and emotional exhaustion, the poison that works its way inside, the seeming meaninglessness of trying to hold back the tide of crime, the impossibility of suppressing human nature at its ugliest, and the crisis of the spirit that would naturally follow. Director Xavier Beauvois sums it all up in a beautiful final shot, the moment that won Baye the Cesar.

Funuke domo, kanashimi no ai wo misero [Funuke Show Some Love, You Losers!] (2007) Japan

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0910888/

Plot & Summary
Offbeat family drama starring Eriko Sato. When their parents are killed in a bizarre cat-rescuing incident, the dysfunctional Wago siblings are reluctantly forced to endure each other once more under the same roof.

Sumika (Sato) is a selfish wannabe actress, only returning to her quiet, rural home to collect her inheritance. When she finds there's no money and she cannot return to Tokyo for fear of a ruthless loan shark, she immediately recommences terrorizing her younger sister Kyomi and elder stepbrother Shinji, and his new and relentlessly upbeat and optimistic wife Machiko (a wonderful turn by Hiromi Nagasaku).

While being a black comedy from the get-go, 'Funuke' soon gets darker and more demented, as the family's history of violence, prostitution and dark secrets are revealed. While it's no classic, it's a good looking flick made with style and bolstered by some well measured and memorable performances.

Ne le dis à personne [Tell No One] (2006) - France

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362225/

Plot & Summary
Based on a 2001 novel by American mystery writer Harlan Coben, Tell No One is a terrific French thriller full of twists and intrigue that, for once, deserves to be compared to a classic Hitchcock film.

Alex Beck (played by prolific French actor François Cluzet) discovers that his supposedly dead wife may not be dead after all and he has been implicated in another set of murders that are somehow related. By trying to stay one step ahead of the law and some ruthless professional thugs, Alex must clear his name and discover if his wife is actually alive. As the revelations pile up, so do the bodies.

Tell No One is only the second film by director Guillaume Canet, who is better known as an actor, but it is a very sophisticated and entertaining film. Like Spike Lee did in Inside Man with post 9-11 American politics, Canet uses the thriller genre to imbed some very serious social critique about class and racial barriers in French society. Tell No One also contains one of the most exhilarating on foot chase scenes the cinema has ever seen.

Der Knochenmann [The Bone Man] (2009) - Austrian

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1181927/

Plot & Summary
What is it about great European indies that make them so endlessly fascinating and watchable? The Bone Man is another example. It’s two hours of terrific entertainment. It kept me guessing throughout and I appreciated the exquisite quality of everything in the frame here: the acting, the cinematography, the music.
The script is pitch perfect too. Lead actor Josef Hader as “Brenner” does wonders simply with an aged, weathered gaze. His facial expressions are a symphonic performance in and of themselves. Playing a retired cop, now reluctant repo man, he keeps getting pulled back in to do one last job. A familiar storyline. But when he heads to the country to find a lemon yellow Beetle, things don’t exactly unfold as planned.
The supporting cast is equally strong.

Is it a thriller? A farce? A dark comedy? I’ll leave that for you to figure out. One thing it definitely is: awesome.

El traspatio [Backyard] 2009 - Mexico

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1257579/

Plot & Summary
The problem of the death women is the hydra for any authority of Cd.Juárez, a common place for the intellectuals and artists to denunciate and a complete state of "under siege" for the society who see the problem unsolved since so many time. With that background, this is maybe the first Mexican film to approach this serious matter since the documentary "Señorita Extraviada" back in 2001. And definitely, El Traspatio goes in a more direct direction than Bordertown(2006) with J-Lo and Banderas having persecutions in Hollywood style, or that forced (and failed because it was superficial) mention in Casi Divas (2008). There are many talented people in this one: Reknown writer Sabina Berman takes some stories (of course it's not possible to hold the whole matter in one film) and builds the principal frame. Skilled director Carlos Carrera (from that Alfonso Cuarón/González Iñarritu generation) takes a crew of great actors (so many great performances!) and presents us the open wound. It's a great change for the Carrera style, going now into city stories more than rural ones. Look for the cinematography, is really outstanding. The story goes to the nearly stages (no one can tell the beginning) of the problem with a net of characters and stories that connect each other, transporting the audience to Cd. Juárez and giving many topics to think about. If you are interested in social intelligent cinema, don't miss this one.

Fatso (2008) - Norway

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1145446/

Plot & Summary
Like most Norwegian movies, the story concerns a sexually arrested man in an Oslo apartment whose main goal in life is to get laid. But unlike the cutesy characters usually presented, this guy is a monster. Only not. We get such uncensored glimpses of his sexual imagination that even as one laughs, one might also feel uncomfortable by the honesty with which his mind is presented. Especially since we all know that deep down we're not as far away from his thought processes as we imagine. The story is basically a repeat of the cinematic wave that made 1999 such a banner year for American cinema, exploring the male psyche and his place in modern society. Sure, not many women would want to sleep with, or get to know, this obese, inward-looking, one-track-mind person, but the filmmakers are fully committed to support his right to be fat, horny and in lust for companionship.

Everything he sees reminds him of sex, sometimes in very concrete ways, sometimes in more abstract ways and some times his mind wanders into combinations of childish superhero worship and universal needs. He is a lonely man who sits in his apartment eating, masturbating and subconsciously hating himself, until his father rents out a room in his large apartment to a sexy Swedish girl with issues of her own. Some see her character as underdeveloped, but we only see her from Rino's point of view, and there are enough moments of desperation in her story to suggest that the angst of the movie is universal, regardless of apparent status, looks and crowd. She doesn't need to be an angel or insanely smart because all Rino needs is someone, anyone, to see him, even if it is with disgust in their eyes.

The story takes us through Rino's journey out of his misery, but it only takes us so far, the filmmakers resisting the temptation to give us the American miracle-cure. The alterations he makes to his universe are things most of us could learn from, even if we're not in as deep a ditch as him. He goes from being an anti-hero to a hero in the traditional sense, trying anything to achieve his goals, while also displaying moral ambiguities that makes him tragically human. His relationship with his best friend is both hilarious and sad, the metaphors are direct and truthful, the way he sees the world has a twisted universality to it. Somehow a PERSON has found his way into a stylized comedy.

At it's core, this is not a movie about getting laid, losing weight, getting friends, status, cooler clothes or creative success, which are all goals the movie keeps open throughout. It's about seeing yourself in others. As he sees the tragedy beneath beautiful surfaces and beauty and humanity beneath ugly exteriors he keeps developing a sense of himself. And through discovering the human being in Rino, viewers who are honest with themselves may see their own lives in a slightly different light and walk out of the theaters as more of a person.
